Understanding Carpenter Bees.

First you need to know that carpenter bees are characterized as “large” or “small”.  It’s those large buggers who cause the most property damage in Illinois.  The large carpenter bees are two to three times larger than the small ones.  If you are inclined to look closely enough the males have yellow sections on their faces.  The general coloring of this species is not as vibrant as a bumble bee.

These summertime pests feed mostly on plants and nectar.  The problems arise when they begin to attack and consume doors, window sills, decks, and fences.  Their tastiest treats are pine, cypress, oak, and redwood among others.  Carpenter bees have 4 stages of life taking about two months before they reach adulthood.

They may be fun to look at, but the damage that they can do to your property could be profound.
