It is the beginning of a famous old song, but in this case
it signifies the beginning of ant season in Chicagoland. Carpenter ants are one of the most common
household pests in the Midwest. While
they are obviously a nuisance indoors, these ants damage wood by hollowing it
out to make nesting space.
Carpenter ants are also the largest pest ants in the United
States. The most common in our area is
the black carpenter ant. To help you
identify this pest the typical adult, known as a “worker” ant, is black,
wingless and varies from ¼- to ½-inch in length. To be certain, look for the carpenter ant’s
smoothly rounded thorax.
They probably won’t go away forever without professional
