The History of Pest Control.

Controlling pests of all types goes back a long, long way.  Would you believe 4500 years?  That’s right, people began controlling insects with sulpher compounds around 2500 BC!  For a thousand years recorded history does not have much of an advance in this method.  Then around 1500 BC farmers began controlling planting dates to keep the bugs down.

A big year in pest control was 1880 when the first commercial spraying machine was introduced.  It was not until 1921 that airplanes were used to spray crops.  The 1940’s saw the dawn of the much-maligned DDT.  1972 was a watershed year as The Federal Environmental Pesticides Control Act passes. The USDA funds IPM research.
